EWI Grande Prairie

Hello everyone,

A little spin this morning on the mortgage information postings I usually do: I wanted to spread the word about our EWI chapter here in Grande Prairie and tell you a little bit about what we've been up to.

EWI is an international association that promotes literacy and entrepreneurship in our local communities. Our membership is made up of like-minded business women that see value in literacy efforts and also see the networking advantage in our monthly meets. The Grande Prairie chapter was chartered just over a year ago, and we've grown quickly to include 38 wonderful members. We hold monthly dinner meetings at the Stanford Inn from 6-8:30 which always include some sort of business development element - be it a guest speaker or hands-on workshop.

Over the last year, we've raised money for and awarded two scholarships in our Peace Region: one for women looking to return to post secondary education, and one for current year high school graduates. We would love to add a third scholarship this year.

You may or may not know that our region has the lowest literacy rates in Alberta? It affects us all every day. This October EWI held the firs Reading Rally and we read to over 800 children and donated over 150 books to local teachers and libraries. With the success of this event, our sights are set on bigger projects to have even more impact.

Sounds like a whole lot of fundraising, yes? It sure is, but we manage to do it all in two large events per year: Ladies Night Out, and our annual Hot Heels event. Ladies Night out is coming soon in February 2011, and it would mean a lot to have you there. I am going to be posting the info for this event this week along with a link to Eventbrite for tickets. I can guarantee it will be a great night out, and funds raised go to our wonderful cause. Stay tuned!

As the membership director for our Grande Prairie chapter, I would also like to extend an invitation to one of our general meetings to see what we're all about. Our next general meeting is January 12, 2011 at 6pm at the Stanford Inn (our Christmas party has taken the place of a general meeting this month). We'd love to have you.
